Inverness has been one of Europe's fastest growing cities over the last fifteen years, with a population of around 70000 in 2008, and is home to more than a quarter of the Highland population. It achieved city status in 2001. Its growth has been fuelled by its role as administrative centre for the region, and the presence of modern industries including by medical technologies (Lifescan) and offshore support services in nearby Invergordon. Inverness has seen significant housing development, particularly in the eastern suburbs of Westhill, Culloden and Smithton, and uphill towards the massive Milton of Leys estate on the southern perimeter of the city. To the west, modern homes are being constructed in the grounds of the old Craig Dunain Hospital site.
